Liverpool have tabled offer for Athletic Bilbao attacker Iker Muniain – Marca

As per a report from Marca (via SportWitness), Liverpool have lodged a bid for Athletic Bilbao star Iker Muniain, who's contract is set to expire next summer.

Bilbao standout

Muniain, a gifted 25-year-old attacker, can play on either wing, or even in a more central role.

The once-capped Spanish international has spent his entire career to date on the books of Athletic Bilbao, having made his first-team bow for the Basque outfit at the tender age of 16 in 2009.

To this point, despite a number of injury problems, Muniain has racked up almost 300 appearances for Los Leones, notching 43 goals in the process.

Liverpool interest

However, with his contract at the San Mamés Stadium set to expire next summer, a number of clubs are said to be keen on the idea of coaxing Muniain into the first transfer of his career.

Among these, as per the aforementioned report from Marca, are Premier League giants Liverpool.

The Merseyside outfit are known to be seeking further depth to their attacking ranks, with the failed attempts of the board at Anfield to secure a deal for Lyon captain Nabil Fekir having been one of the talking points of the summer transfer window.

As such, with little in terms of options behind the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane at the club, the Reds are now said to have tabled an offer for Muniain.

It is not made clear whether this offer would be for a January switch or a free transfer next summer.

However, the latter is labelled as more likely.

Muniain's preference

Muniain, for his part, though, is thought to be leaning towards extending his contract with Bilbao.

In addition, Liverpool would face competition from Serie A outfit Napoli for the versatile Spaniard's signature.
