Phil Brown blasts Swindon for poor start against Cambridge

Swindon manager Phil Brown launched a scathing attack on his players as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to lowly Cambridge.

The Robins found themselves two behind after only 12 minutes after conceding twice in as many minutes through woeful defending.

Angry Brown said: “When you start a game in the manner in which we started you give yourself that mountain to climb.

“I’ve questioned every player and there’s not one of them not playing for the badge.

“The collective group in there still seems tight and together, but bottom line: we can’t start games the way we started tonight.”

The defeat cranks up the pressure on Brown, who also saw influential midfielder Michael Doughty stretchered off in the first half.

Brown said: “It’s a matter of keep going, it’s all we can do. We need to keep going, keep working hard on the training ground.

“As far as I’m concerned, we’re getting to the final third but the conversion in terms of the ratio is not high enough.”

Cambridge arrived at the County Ground sitting 23rd in the table and looking for only their third win of the season.

The U’s took the lead after only 11 minutes when Lambe caught home defender Olly Lancashire in possession inside his own box before firing home with his left foot.

Swindon were stunned when the visitors doubled their advantage almost straight from the re-start as Brown ghosted in at the far post to turn in a George Marris cross.

Cambridge manager Joe Dunne said: “We looked comfortable. Just before the two goals we had a couple of opportunities and I was very pleased to get into the lead with two very good goals, two well-worked goals.

“I’m pleased for the lads, and for keeping a clean sheet as well away from home.

“Tactically, I thought we were very good today to ride a lot of pressure but I think we defended it really well and probably could have had one or two more goals on the break.

“I think it’s great consistency to stick to the philosophy of how we want to play.”
