Bunn demands more from Oldham players after beating Cheltenham

Oldham manager Frankie Bunn called on his team to use their 2-0 win against 10-man Cheltenham as the springboard for an improved run of form.

The Latics had gone five matches without victory, but they cashed in at Boundary Park after Cheltenham’s Sam Jones was sent off just before the break.

Jones was involved in an altercation with Oldham’s Jose Baxter and was shown a straight red card for thrusting his head towards his opponent.

The dominant home side made their breakthrough in the 75th minute when substitute Jonathan Benteke – the brother of Belgium striker Christian – slid in Rob Hunt’s near-post cross.

Callum Lang doubled the lead in injury time, superbly spinning defenders inside the box and calmly finding the bottom corner.

Bunn said: “No games are easy in this league and it will be another tough one at Northampton on Saturday, but hopefully this will give us some impetus.

“Our away form has been terrific and there has only been one home game when we didn’t perform, so we are doing okay and we can definitely get better.

“We wanted to start the game brightly and get after Cheltenham. We got players in good positions but didn’t take those opportunities.

“That has been our story at home this season, but the players kept plugging away even though they had to wait for the goal to come.

“In the end the first goal was a bit scruffy, but Jonathan did what a centre-forward should do and got across the near post to score.

“The second from Callum was individual brilliance, but I’m delighted with how every single one of the players kept going and had that desire to get three points.”

Cheltenham’s troubles deepened as they extended their winless run to seven games.

Manager Michael Duff said: “It’s an over-riding sense of disappointment.

“We had a go and the referee changed the game with the red card, but we need to stop having those ‘what if’ moments and start making things happen for ourselves.

“There has been a lot of work on the training ground and you can see the shape, but we need to threaten more than we did tonight and we need to be better with the ball.

“First and foremost we need to win the next game. It’s up to the players to take responsibility, grab the shirt and show character.

“With 11 men in the second half it would have been different, but it was a soft sending off. It happened right in front of me and both players had their heads into each other.

“The referee changed it, but Sam gave him a decision to make. He shouldn’t have got involved and he has let his mates down.”
