Wes Thomas effort enough as Grimsby edge Colchester

Wes Thomas’ second-half goal proved enough as Grimsby extended their unbeaten League Two run to four matches as they picked up a third win in four games by edging Colchester 1-0.
Visiting goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin was called into action early on as Thomas’ strike from the edge of the box deflected into the path of Charles Vernam, but the stopper was quick off his line to block the striker’s effort.
Colchester were almost gifted the lead when Reece Hall-Johnson’s back-pass fell into the path of Luke Norris, but the usually-dependable striker could not beat James McKeown as the Grimsby goalkeeper did well to block his effort.
Elliot Embleton carved out a great chance for JJ Hooper as he weaved into the penalty box before squaring the ball to his team-mate, but the forward could not sort his feet out as the chance went begging.
Courtney Senior headed against the crossbar in the second half after good work from Kane Vincent-Young down the left, but it was Grimsby who would claim the victory when Thomas cut inside from the left to finish coolly beyond Gilmartin after 65 minutes.
