Nigel Clough urges Burton to build on rare away win at Plymouth

Nigel Clough hopes Burton’s 3-2 victory at struggling Plymouth breeds confidence after his side picked up their first Sky Bet League One away win this term.

Kyle McFadzean headed Burton’s 84th-minute winner from a free-kick to add to his first-half header from a 19th-minute corner.

Freddie Ladapo’s first-half double was cancelled out by McFadzean and Burton skipper Lucas Akins, who headed home from a 39th-minute corner.

Clough said: “It feels great, it feels like it shouldn’t have taken this long with some of the performances we have had away from home. The longer it goes on the longer it becomes an issue.

“We should have been better than 2-2 at half-time because we controlled the game and just gave away two silly goals.

“The second half was much more even. They came out second half and, in terms of chances, they started well, we got on top for the middle part and got the goal. It was nice to see it through until the end.

“We have highlighted to the players we didn’t want to be another victim to teams who have been struggling and the only games they seem to win are against Burton.

“We are a bit fed up of that happening and it’s nice to get that off our back. We knew it would drop sooner or later.

“We have been building confidence in the last few weeks. To actually put in a reasonable performance and win the game builds confidence. We have got some tough games coming up and it’s lovely to start with a win.”

Argyle boss Derek Adams said: “We started the game very well, got a good goal from Freddie and played on the front foot.

“Freddie’s taken the goal very well and put it into the bottom corner.

“After that we concede a couple of corner kicks and give away a number of free-kicks which leads to the goals for them.

“We didn’t defend well enough at set-plays today, which is not like us.

“We’ve obviously missed Yann Songo’o, who does a very good job in that respect. Their three goals have all come from set-plays.

“At 2-2 after Freddie scores his two goals he has a great opportunity to make it 3-2 but puts the ball past the post and that gives them a bit of belief again.

“But to concede the three goals that we did today was really disappointing because we’re not like that.

“We are usually very good in that area. In the end we gave away another silly foul on the edge of the box, and it allows them to put another free ball into the box.”
