Ainsworth praises his players for ‘phenomenal’ comeback win over Scunthorpe

Gareth Ainsworth was full of praise for his Wycombe side after they came back from 2-0 down to snatch all three points with a 3-2 win over Scunthorpe.

The visitors raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Ryan Colclough and Stephen Humphrys but Wycombe hit back through Dominic Gape, Fred Onyedinma and a stoppage-time winner from Craig Mackail-Smith.

And the opening ten minutes aside, Ainsworth felt his side were good value for the three points.

He said: “After the first 10 minutes, the lads were absolutely superb.

“From 10-99 minutes, the game went to plan exactly how I wanted it to.

“The first 10 minutes, I want to forget. I am going to have to have a look at it but it looked like we defended too deep and dropped off too much and we were shell-shocked.

“Scunthorpe are a good side. They are a top 10 side, maybe the play-offs and for us to get that win, after being 2-0 down is phenomenal.

“That win was about character. I am so pleased for the boys.

“Mackail-Smith has been doing that for years and he is the last person you want from an opposition point of view to have a chance one-on-one because he will punish you.”

Stuart McCall’s side got off to the perfect start as Colclough scored after just 18 seconds.

He cut in from the left before firing past a stranded Ryan Allsop.

Humphrys then made it 2-0 in double-quick time, clinically slotting past Allsop.

But the comeback started on 26 minutes for the Chairboys as Gape’s exquisite finish halved the deficit.

And they were level after the break when Onyedinma curled home a beauty from 20 yards on 53 minutes after wonderful hold-up play by Adebayo Akinfenwa.

It looked like Wycombe would settle for a point when Allsop was sent off with 10 minutes to go after being given a straight red for a foul on Ike Ugbo.

But deep into stoppage time Mackail-Smith popped up to net the winner after capitalising on a mistake from defender Rory McArdle.

Scunthorpe boss McCall said: “It is very hard to take.

“We saw yet again, the good and bad of Scunthorpe United. We can’t keep conceding three goals but I keep on saying it.

“We go 2-0 up with counter-attacking football and we know what Wycombe are about.

“Whatever anyone says about Akinfenwa, he is a huge handful at this level.

“They have scored two really good goals but second half we were loose in possession and we don’t take care enough of the ball.

“When their boy (Allsop) got sent off, the minimum we were thinking about was a point.

“We lost a game that we should have got a point from.”
