Ross County replaced Ayr at the top of the Scottish Championship with a 2-1 win in the battle of the top two at Victoria Park.
First-half strikes from Billy McKay and Josh Mullin were enough to secure the win and extend County’s unbeaten run to seven league games, though Ayr threatened to launch a comeback when Lawrence Shankland struck after the break.
McKay put the hosts ahead after 23 minutes, firing a right-footed strike into the top corner.
Stuart Kettlewell’s side doubled the lead after 34 minutes through a stunning strike from Mullin, who rifled his effort into the top corner from 25 yards.
Ayr, who had won their previous four games, reduced the deficit four minutes after the break as Shankland smashed home from close range.
Shankland forced a good save from Scott Fox seven minutes from time as Ayr came close to snatching an equaliser but the Championship’s tightest defence held on to seal the victory and move a point clear at the top.
