Liverpool's Dejan Lovren linked with shock move to Barcelona

According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, La Liga giants FC Barcelona are eyeing a January move for Liverpool and Croatia centre-back, Dejan Lovren.

Barcelona's centre-back crisis

The reason Barcelona are reportedly interested in somewhat of a shock move for Lovren is due to their deepening injury crisis at centre-back.

At the end of September, France and Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti would suffer a knee injury.

Barca boss Ernesto Valverde was hopeful that Umtiti's injury was not too serious:

"He's got a knee problem so he couldn't have played on Wednesday.

"Let's see how things develop, but hopefully it won't be too long before he's back with us. It's a blow for us."

However, Umtiti is expected to be out of action for several months.

The Catalonian side's injury problems were further deepened when it was revealed that Thomas Vermaelen could be out for up to six weeks.

A statement from Barcelona's official website regarding the Belgian's injury read:

"The tests carried out on Monday confirmed that first team player Thomas Vermaelen has an injury to the femoral biceps of his right leg. Approximate down time is six weeks."

As a result of these two injuries, Barca seem to believe signing a new defender in January is a must do with Lovren high on their list of targets.

Dejan Lovren's time at Liverpool

Lovren arrived at Liverpool from Southampton in 2014 for a fee of around £22.5 million.

The 29-year-old has gone on to play an impressive 154 games for Liverpool in all competitions.

While Lovren has garnered his fair share of criticism during his tenure at Anfield, the 2017/18 season was one of Lovren's best on Merseyside.

Lovren played 43 games in all competitions for Liverpool last campaign and was a key member of the squad as Liverpool made it to the Champions League final.

The defender also played every World Cup game for Croatia on their road to the World Cup final.

This season, however, Lovren has made just two appearances for Liverpool.

As a result, he could well be open to a move to Spain in January.
