Danny Cowley delighted with Lincoln’s dominant display at Port Vale

Lincoln boss Danny Cowley was delighted with his side after the League Two leaders hit Port Vale for six.

The ruthless visitors were 3-0 up at half-time, Harry Anderson drilling in early on before a powerful strike from Shay McCartan and Leon Legge’s own goal.

After the break, Michael Bostwick’s close-range finish two minutes after half-time made it four before Tom Conlon pulled one back from a free-kick.

Lincoln scored their fifth and sixth in the closing stages through efforts from Scott Wharton and substitute James Wilson before Ben Whitfield struck a stoppage-time penalty for the home side.

And Cowley, who has guided the Sincil Bank side to a four-point lead at the top of Sky Bet League Two, was proud of the Imps’ efforts on a rain-soaked afternoon.

“The players had to take an awful lot on today and to be able to do it is credit to them and their tactical intelligence, I thought they were really good today in that respect,” Cowley said.

“They (the fans) were brilliant, I spoke to a few of them before as we had a few hundred here today, they definitely helped the vocals, and they were excellent.

“It is a good day for us a football club, but we have to dust ourselves down as we have picked up some nasty injuries over the course of the last 48 hours, we’ll need to see they recover, but we are not getting carried away with our performance today as it only gets us three points, as we’ve got two tough games ahead.

“They (the fans) can enjoy tonight but know when we play and perform as well as we did, it makes next Saturday even harder, and we’ll need to work double hard.”

Lincoln maintained their four-point lead at the summit after each of the top six teams won their respective matches, with Exeter and Newport rounding off the automatic promotion places.

However, at the other end of the table, Vale boss Neil Aspin was left fuming after watching his side, who sit in 16th place, slump to their third successive league defeat and he did not hold back in his post-match comments.

“Don’t be criticising my team selection, the players have let the club down and they have let me down,” Aspin said.

“Watching from the touchline it was like torture, but I won’t be walking away.

“The players must take responsibility for themselves, I’m not making excuses, I’ll be coming under a lot of pressure.”
