Exeter boss Matt Taylor hails ‘complete performance’ during Swindon win

Exeter manager Matt Taylor could not hide his delight as the Grecians maintained their superb recent form with a comfortable 2-0 win over Swindon at St James Park.

Jonathan Forte got the ball rolling on 14 minutes when he latched onto a long Christy Pym goal kick and flicked the ball past stranded goalkeeper Luke McCormick and into the net.

Exeter had chances to increase their lead, but it was top-scorer Jayden Stockley that bagged the second goal on 63 minutes when he headed in from Pierce Sweeney’s sublime cross.

Exeter could have gone on to win by a bigger margin, but were denied a spectacular third goal when Stockley acrobatically volleyed home another Sweeney cross, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Boss Taylor was a far happier man than a week ago when he could not hide his frustration after seeing his side let things slip in a 2-2 draw at Yeovil.

“Anyone that was here today will justify how difficult it was with the weather conditions, I think the south-west has been hit pretty hard with the storm,” Taylor said.

“We had to deal with a bit of pressure, certainly in the first half and playing into that wind. We were penned in for long periods, but we had enough of a threat going forward and I am delighted with a clean sheet on the back of some sloppy defending last weekend.

“Last weekend, I couldn’t hide my frustration, but this weekend, I am absolutely delighted with that.

“We defended our goal really well and limited them to half chances and we still had a threat going forward and have scored two good goals, which we worked on in the week.

“The clean sheet was important. I had a bit of a pop at the lads last week and told them they needed to be better in certain aspects of their game and that was a pretty complete performance.”

Swindon boss Phil Brown was furious with his side’s display, just four days after they crushed Sky Bet League One Plymouth 3-0 in the Checkatrade Trophy.

“It was a totally unacceptable performance,” he fumed. “I have asked the players about the system, individual performances and team selection and I take full responsibility for that.

“If I got it wrong, I hold my hands up and apologies to the fans. As far as I am concerned the underbelly of the team was exposed today by a solid second division outfit that look like they have got their basics bang on and we haven’t.

“It was almost like we accepted their game plan, which was to get ahead in the game. They did that with a long punt down the middle – a nothing ball as far as I am concerned – and you would expect one of the centre backs to get their head on the ball and they didn’t.

“We had probably three half-decent chances and we didn’t take any of them. The blame lies all over the park.”
