Kylian Mbappe not satisfied with four-goal haul for record-breaking PSG

Kylian Mbappe insisted he should have done better after his four-goal blitz fired Paris St Germain to a new Ligue 1 record.

The 19-year-old France striker blew Lyon away – scoring four times between the 61st and 74th minutes – as PSG romped to a 5-0 win at Parc des Princes.

It was PSG’s ninth Ligue 1 success in a row from the start of the season, eclipsing the 82-year-old record set by Olympique Lillois during the 1936-37 campaign.

“There have been a lot of things in this game that will make us remember it,” Mbappe told CanalPlus after claiming his first PSG hat-trick and doubling his league goal tally in one evening.

“I should have scored more goals, it’s part of the steps I have to go to get to the top.

“But at no time (have) I doubted.  As long as an attacker creates opportunities, everything is fine.”

Mbappe won the ninth-minute penalty which allowed Neymar to open the scoring with his 11th goal of the season.

PSG were at a one-man disadvantage when Presnel Kimpembe was sent off for a 32nd-minute lunge on Tanguy Ndombele.

But Lucas Tousart’s second yellow card on the stroke of half-time evened up the numbers.

“The most important thing is the work of a whole team and the record of the day,” Mbappe said.

“I will insist on the collective. We wanted to win and make history in this championship. We wanted this record.

“We have a new coach, a new philosophy, and we show that we can adapt.

“When we make the effort for each other, it makes the difference.”

PSG manager Thomas Tuchel paid tribute to his players, who hold an eight-point lead over second-placed Lille and have scored 32 goals in nine goals.

“There was a lot of confidence and an incredible state of mind,” Tuchel said.

“But I’m not surprised, I know they are capable of special things.

“They play and work as a team for a few weeks. It was really amazing. It is deserved.”

Lyon came in to the contest on a six-game unbeaten run that had lifted them into sixth place in Ligue 1.

Bruno Genesio’s side have taken the scalps of Manchester City and Marseille this season, but there was no way back for them after Anthony Lopes had inexplicably raced off his line to fell Mbappe.

“We came with good intentions, but then the penalty cuts our legs a little,” Lopes said.

“We had some opportunities to come back in the first period, but we do not do it.

“We have big chances in the second half, but we were not at the level.

“Five-nil is very severe, that’s a lot, but we will not give up and we will continue to work.”
