Adams praises Plymouth after narrow victory over Wimbledon

Plymouth manager Derek Adams praised striker Freddie Ladapo for his winner as the greens beat Wimbledon 1-0 to claim their first League One win of the season.

The match turned on a superb save by on-loan Arsenal keeper Matt Macey to deny former Argyle forward Jake Jervis at the start of the second half.

The win lifts Argyle off the basement above Oxford ahead of their clash at Kassam Stadium next Saturday.

Adams said: “I was delighted for him (Ladapo). It would have been easy for me to have taken him off the pitch but he was leading the line well.”

Ladapo headed home at the far post in the 75th minute after missing a first half one on one opportunity to put Plymouth ahead.

Adams added: “It’s been a long time coming. We have been close at times this season but we haven’t been able to get that victory but today we did. It was a very tight match, it was very scrappy because of the conditions.

“We could have gone in 1-0 ahead at half-time. Freddie probably should have scored in the first half but the he got himself a goal in the second half.

“It was well worked, a good short corner from Ruben Lameiras into Graham Carey, who turned and clipped the ball to the back post to Freddie.

“They are three players who have all scored in the last few games for us, they are important players for us.

“You saw after that goal, they got a lift from that and started to play on the front foot.

“We played with confidence, flicked things around the corner and ran forward because they knew they were on top of the game then.

“Confidence is a major thing in football. We all know that players have got ability but you need to be confident. We have been confident but we haven’t been able to execute at times.

“Today we have been able to get the goal, three points and a clean sheet, which helps, and we’ve moved ourselves up the table.”

Wimbledon boss Neal Ardley said: “I asked the boys to go out, play, attack and be brave and not fear. They gave me all of that.

“We were the better team in the first half and in the first 20 minutes of the second half up until they scored.

“We switch off at a short corner and get punished and that is the way things are going for us at the moment. I don’t think we deserved to lose today.

“In the second half we had a great chance and how it has not gone in I don’t know and they are defining moments.

“They are the margins that turn a 1-0 loss into a 1-0 win and at the moment we can’t seem to buy that. The one time we switched off we were punished and fans will see the result and ultimately that is what it is about. But I can’t ask for any more from the boys.

“When results don’t go your way, it is hard. You can get yourself into a rut. Today we did enough to be worst case scenario 0-0, and we had the chances to win the game. They took their chance and we didn’t.”
