Dino Maamria purring with delight over Steveange performance

Dino Maamria insists his Stevenage side played like Manchester City and could have put six or seven past Colchester.

Despite going down to an early Sammie Szmodics goal, the hosts bossed the match at Broadhall Way – with Kurtis Guthrie scoring against his former club to level things up.

However, Colchester valiantly held on – surviving by the skin of the teeth until the 82nd-minute – when Ben Kennedy slotted away a penalty.

And the hosts rounded off the 3-1 win late on with Emmanuel Sonupe finishing well and Maamria admits he was purring on the touchline.

“We conceded from their first attack but one of the big things I put across in the dressing room is that you have to play the next moment,” he said.

“Things happen but the thing we’re trying to implement here is passing the ball from the back.

“I know this football club is not familiar with it and we haven’t played that football before but we’re trying to bring it in.

“We want to play good football and win games and even after conceding, we made sure we showed we want to play from the back.

“Even at Manchester City, it took time for Pep Guardiola to play that football. But after the first 20-25 minutes, we were absolutely brilliant.

“We could have scored six or seven and no-one would have complained. The pleasing thing is how much we attacked on the front foot.

“We played with a high tempo, we passed the ball well and we defended with resilience and brilliance. It was different class.”

Colchester boss Joh McGreal said: “The early goal gave us a good base to start, but we were really wasteful for the next 20 minutes, despite getting at their back four.

“But for the last hour we were really really poor. We gave them a few facts at half-time, because we sensed what was coming, having given away a poor goal from a set piece.

“But we then started poorly again in the second half.

“I felt overall we should have scored more goals in that first half-hour. We played some terrific stuff early on, but we then dropped a little bit for the last 15 minutes of the half.”
