Late West Brom rally earns a point at Sheffield Wednesday

West Brom scored twice in the last five minutes to earn a 2-2 draw in the Sky Bet Championship at Sheffield Wednesday.

Adam Reach and Fernando Forestieri had scored the first half goals to put Wednesday in control at Hillsborough before Joey Pelupessy put the ball in his own net to give the Baggies hope and Harvey Barnes levelled.

Reach fired in a spectacular 25-yard shot and Forestieri applied a cool finish in a rousing first half.

Tyrone Mears brought a fine save out of Cameron Dawson and Dwight Gayle hit the bar in the opening period before the Baggies’ late show.

West Brom had the ball in the net with six minutes gone but Craig Dawson’s low finish was ruled out for a push in the build-up.

Barnes won a free-kick with a surging run but Chris Brunt curled his effort from 25 yards round the post as both sides pushed for the opener.

Forestieri then forced the first save out of Sam Johnstone with a curling low shot but the goalkeeper got down low to block.

Wednesday took the lead after 23 minutes when Reach picked his spot with a spectacular shot from the right side of the area 25 yards out. His effort gave Johnstone no chance as it found the top left corner of the goal.

Reach had the chance to make it two nine minutes later but hooked wide from a tight angle.

West Brom came close to levelling five minutes before the break but Cameron Dawson pulled off an instinctive save from Mears and almost immediately Wednesday doubled their lead following a flowing move.

The visitors failed to cut out a cross to the back post and Forestieri brought the ball down and took a touch before shooting past Johnstone.

Gayle went close to pulling a goal back when his left-foot shot came back off the bar in a rousing finish to the first half.

West Brom again had a goal disallowed, this time early in the second half, when Kyle Bartley’s header was chalked off after Craig Dawson had barged over his namesake on the goal line.

Forestieri clipped the ball wide across goal after catching Ahmed Hegazi in possession 10 yards out as Wednesday pushed for a third, the same Wednesday player shooting straight at Johnstone shortly after.

West Brom looked set to miss out until Pelupessy turned a low cross from Brunt with five minutes to go into the net under pressure from Barnes.

And Barnes then set off on a mazy run two minutes later and shooting low past Cameron Dawson from close range despite the attentions of three defenders.

The draw meant West Brom dropped to fourth in the table with Wednesday in 12th.
