Michael Jolley hopeful Grimsby’s win at Carlisle can be a springboard

Grimsby manager Michael Jolley is hoping his side can use their 1-0 win at Carlisle as a springboard for future improvement and to spark a climb up the League Two table.

The Mariners ended a desperate run of six defeats thanks to a first-half strike from defender Luke Hendrie but almost had cause to rue a whole series of missed chances.

Carlisle came back strongly after the break but apart from a header by  Macaulay Gillesphey that hit the post, they were unable to break down a resolute Grimsby rearguard.

Jolley said: “Hopefully we can now pick up from where we’ve left off tonight and use this result as a springboard.

“We have had a poor run of form and results and we have been working hard to improve.”

“I thought we deserved the three points tonight. We were particularly good in the first half where we had chances and we defended well in the second half when Carlisle came at us.”

Jolley added: “We made some enforced changes and the lads that came in adapted and contributed to a very good team performance. We were excellent in attacking and created some good chances.

“The fans who got here on a Tuesday night were unbelieveable and we are grateful for their support.”

Jolley admitted: “Carlisle were on the front foot in the second half and pushed us back. We had to defend and we did really well.

“We are aware of the situation we have been in and six defeats in a row is not good enough for Grimsby, but we showed the players are working hard to get results. Now let’s see if we can take that forward.”

Carlisle manager John Sheridan warned his team not to pay attention to Grimsby’s second-bottom position in the league prior to kick-off and forecast they would provide tough opposition.

Grimsby could have put the game to bed well before half-time had they taken advantage of a series of gilt-edged opportunities.

Adam Collin in the home goal saved from JJ Hooper and Charles Vernam in the first 11 minutes and Hooper also headed wide when it looked easier to score.

Then Wes Thomas was inches off target with a fizzing low shot before the breakthrough came in the 38th minute when Hendrie drilled a rebound home after Collin had blocked Vernam’s initial  effort with his legs.

Carlisle manager Sheridan lamented his side’s problems in the last 18 yards of the pitch after a third successive home defeat without finding the target.

He said: “The first half Adam Collin kept us in it, but in the second half I thought we played really well.

“The problem where we are missing out is scoring goals and we were so untidy from 18 yards.”
