Ramsey has been in negotiations over a new deal for several months with his preference to remain at the Emirates.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery had spoken of his desire to work with Ramsey and hailed his quality.

The Wales international started the season without signing a new deal and talks are now understood to have been stopped.

But BBC Sport reporter Ornstein has claimed Ramsey and Arsenal had agreed a long-term deal before the club rescinded the offer.

And it now means Arsenal must offload Ramsey in January or face losing him for free next summer.

"A new + improved 4yr contract was recently agreed between Arsenal & Aaron Ramsey,” Ornstein tweeted.

"But #AFC withdrew offer, are now not in a position to proceed.

"Most likely he’ll leave for free next summer, unless the perfect opportunity for both parties arises in January.”

Scottish football legend Ally McCoist has blasted the Gunners for not tying Ramsey down.

He told talkSPORT: “If that’s been allowed to happen that is absolutely unbelievable.

"Not just the football side of it, it’s the business side of it – if they’ve allowed Ramsey’s contract to expire in the summer that’s absolutely incredible.

"In fact, it’s that incredible, I can’t believe it’s true.

"A host of clubs who would want to take Aaron Ramsey.

"He could play anywhere, he would certainly be suited to playing somewhere else in Europe – he could play in Spain or in Italy.

"It’s another little headache Arsenal have got if that’s the case.”
