Michael Flynn hails Newport for bouncing back at Tranmere

Michael Flynn heaped praise on his players after Newport put last week’s thrashing at home to Yeovil behind them with a hard-fought 1-0 away win at Tranmere.
Fraser Franks gave the Exiles the lead on their first attack after only five minutes and from thereon in, the visitors showed dogged determination to hang on for their third consecutive league away win.
The result keeps Newport in third place while Tranmere slid back down to 14th in League Two.
Flynn said: “I thought the players were absolutely fantastic. Even at the end – when we had to hang on a bit, when they threw everything at us – they defended excellently.
“It goes to show that the things we do work on (work) and hopefully last week was a one-off blip because the way they’ve defended today was absolutely exceptional.
“But if we’d taken our clear-cut chances we’d have won the game by three or four. (James) Norwood’s missed one for them in the first half and then the save at end – they’ve not really troubled the ‘keeper apart from that. It’s a very very good away performance.
“We’re away from home. For the last 10 minutes when they throw everything at you, you’ve got to be strong and resilient and keep your shape because it’s a tough place to come. The boys have dug in and done their job.”
Newport led when a cross from Dan Butler was headed back across goal by Padraig Amond and Franks reacted quickest to smash the ball home.
Antoine Semenyo shot wide before Scott Davies tipped a Mark O’Brien header over the bar as Newport produced all the chances.
James Norwood saw a chip sail over and Joe Day denied Larnell Cole at the death but Rovers created little, suffering their first home defeat of the season in the league.
Tranmere boss Micky Mellon said: “It’s very frustrating. To lose a goal so early from a second phase free-kick is obviously something every team wants to try and avoid.
“It’s something that you believe that you shouldn’t do and to lose it as early as that created a bit of frustration.
“We never really got into a rhythm and allowed ourselves to be man-to-man marked all over the pitch. Our movement wasn’t what it usually is.
“When we did get it into the forward areas, we weren’t imaginative enough. We never really did much of the stuff that we work on, on Thursday and Friday.
“We were freeing full-backs up but not really showing the imagination or ability that was needed to unlock a Newport team that defended their 18-yard box very well.
“It was just that type of day, stop-started by a referee, who I thought was poor.”
