Bruce feels disappointment after Villa’s home loss to Sheffield Wednesday

Steve Bruce described Aston Villa’s shock 2-1 home defeat against Sheffield Wednesday in the Sky Bet Championship as “a huge disappointment.”

Villa’s lack of cutting edge was exposed by a Wednesday side which gained in confidence with their ability to contain the hosts at Villa Park.

The visitors took a smart lead through Marco da Silva’s 49th minute goal. Although John McGinn levelled five minutes later with his first goal for Villa, a spectacular shot on the volley, the Owls won it with Steven Fletcher’s 66th- minute goal – his second goal in successive games.

Bruce admitted: “It was a huge disappointment.  We didn’t play well enough on the day.

“We didn’t move the ball quick enough and when you have five, six or seven below par it transcends into one of those awful afternoons.

“We have to accept it and move on. In football it is not given right that you play well every week.  Only the great teams do that.

“Against a very resilient and organised Sheffield side, who played five at the back and four in front of them, we found it very difficult.

“We kept giving the ball away too cheaply in the first half and that reverberated around everywhere.

“As a result we didn’t get the ball to our strikers with any quality and we got punished.”

The Villa manager added: “That was only my fifth home defeat in 100 games, twice against Sheffield Wednesday.

“The crowd was terrific but I understand there are some I can never win over.  But that is part and parcel of being a manager.

“I still believe the team will be a threat in this division. You need time and that is the magic word that we all look for because however you dress it up it is a new team.

“People have only been here two or three weeks and they need time to settle in. Once they do, they will be fine.”

Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay said: “I am very proud of my team, after the defeat at Nottingham Forest in midweek.

“To play at Villa Park against a very good team…I think it was our best away performance since I have been at Sheffield Wednesday.

“We had a lot of good chances and made a very good first goal but after Villa quickly equalised we had to keep a good feeling to score a second goal.

“It was a fantastic win and I feel good.  After this win we can move forward even further.

“What impressed me was the team spirit. It was our third game in seven days
and the players showed great character.

“On the ball we played really well and this is the way I want Wednesday to play.
To win at Villa Park against such a big club made me so happy.”
