Lowe frustrated as Bury slip to home defeat

Bury manager Ryan Lowe was left to bemoan his sides lack of cutting edge in front of goal as they suffered defeat for the first time this season on home soil against with Carlisle.

The Cumbrians leapfrogged their opponents in the Sky Bet League Two table with the 1-0 win thanks to a second-half strike from Richie Bennett but were forced to finished the game with 10 men after Jerry Yates’ late red.

It was a first defeat in the league for almost a month, which left Lowe frustrated after seeing a host of late chances go begging.

“It was frustrating today, tough to take when you’re on a good run of form.” said Lowe.

“I can’t fault the lad’s efforts and desire to get back in but overall it was a frustrating afternoon.”

Despite Bury spending much of the last 10 minutes camped inside Carlisle’s half in search of an equalise, Lowe conceded that they could possibly have done more to get themselves back into the game.

He added: “We huffed and puffed with passing the ball backwards and sideways, we could’ve been in their faces more and could’ve got about the pitch a bit more.”

His opposite number, John Sheridan, was delighted by what he saw but felt his side’s defence were never really tested.

He said: “Their players are getting some headers which are just going past the post but that’s what Adam (Collin) is there for and the defenders to defend. Crosses come into the box and we defended when we had to.”

It was a first half of few chances for either side, Bury’s Nicky Adams having about the only chance but saw his shot thunder off the crossbar and away to safety.

Carlisle would eventually get their reward for a bright start to the second half when Jamie Devitt’s corner bobbled to Richie Bennet twelve yards out who wasted no time in slamming the ball into the back of the net, beyond Joe Murphy.

It marked Bennett’s fourth goal of the season but Sheridan still wants more from the former non-league man.

He said: “I’ve got to remember myself, he’s come from non-league, he’s learning the game but he’s scored all his goals away from home which is why I kept him in the side.

“I’d like a lot more from him, I’d like him to believe in himself, he needs to do the basics, stick to them and he’ll be a handful in this league.”
