Fraser Franks’ early effort enough as Newport edge Tranmere

Newport produced the perfect response to last weekend’s trashing at home to Yeovil by securing a hard fought 1-0 victory against Tranmere at Prenton Park.
The Exiles took the lead after only five minutes through Fraser Franks and that is how the score remained.
The result keeps County third in League Two, three points behind leaders Lincoln.
The visitors could be forgiven for starting the match nervously on the back of a 6-0 home humiliation last time out but there was little evidence of that capitulation here as they scored on their first attack.
A cross from Dan Butler was headed back across goal by Padraig Amond and Franks reacted quickest, sneaking in with his chest before smashing the ball home.
Antoine Semenyo pulled a great chance wide before Scott Davies tipped a Mark O’Brien header over the bar as Newport produced the better first-half chances.
James Norwood saw an attempted chip sail over the bar and Joe Day saved well from Larnell Cole at the death, but Rovers created little else and suffered their first home defeat of the season.
