Carlisle’s Bennett condemns Bury to first home defeat

Bury suffered defeat on home soil for the first time in the league this season  as they went down 1-0 to Carlisle, who ended the game with 10 men.

It was a second win in a row on the road for the Cumbrians, which moves them above their hosts and into the play-off places.

In a first half of few chances it was Bury who worked the ball into the box, 27 minutes in, only for the ball to break to Nicky Adams who saw his shot rebound off the crossbar with Adam Collin rooted to the spot.

Carlisle came out the better after the break and got their reward just six minutes in, Richie Bennett was on hand to smash home beyond Joe Murphy from a Jamie Devitt corner.

Bury did have their chances, Adams again missing out on a shot narrowly wide and Adam Thompson seeing a free header go past the post in stoppage time.

John Sheridan’s side saw Jerry Yates shown a straight red card just five minutes from time for foul and abusive behaviour towards the assistant referee, to allow for some late pressure.

Gold Omotayo missed a brace of chances and Adam Thompson also went close but the hosts were unable to draw level.
