The Scottish side drew 2-2 away to the Spaniards after coming from behind.

And after the final whistle, Gerrard found himself at the centre of a Twitter frenzy.

One said: "I swear to God I'm going to end up calling my child Steven Gerrard."

There was one fan who hailed: "He's blue, he's white, he's f****** dynamite, Steve Gerrard."

Before the game, Gerrard said: “Villarreal will be the best side we’ve faced technically. We’re all aware the standard level is about to go up.

"However, Osijek and Maribor also had very technically gifted players within their groups.

"I’m not saying they’re as good as Villarreal but we have faced similar challenges.

"Celtic are a team based on possession, for example, and Villarreal will be very similar.

"We have to play to our strengths and look at ways we can hurt them and we believe we hold a size advantage."

After the game, Gerrard was also praised by Villarreal fans for greeting opposition players as they walked off the pitch.

Footage was posted by a fan of the La Liga side, and has been viewed more than 7,000 times.

One said: "The man is a gentleman."

And another said: "What a legend."

Rangers currently sit fourth in the Scottish Premiership, behind Hearts in first, Celtic second and Livingston third.

Gerrard was appointed Rangers manager in May.

He took over at Ibrox marking his first job in management.

After the appointment, Gerrard said: "When the call came to speak to Rangers, it was a no-brainer.

"It was a different feeling in my stomach from other opportunities I have had to be a manager. I got a special feeling and I knew then that Rangers was for me.

"I have confidence I can deliver here as a manager. A huge opportunity presented itself. I was very aware of the size of club having watched from afar for many years."
