Mark Robins delighted with Coventry display in Barnsley victory

Coventry boss Mark Robins was delighted after his side maintained their home stranglehold on Barnsley with a 1-0 win.

It has been 95 years and 25 matches since Barnsley last won at Coventry and they had opportunities to end that miserable sequence in a rousing match that saw near-misses at both ends.

But, in a game where both teams threatened on the counter-attack, it was a set-piece that settled it as Michael Doyle’s free-kick headed back inside by Dominic Hyam for Jordan Willis to throw himself forward to head home.

“It wasn’t a perfect performance but a 1-0 win against a side who had gone so far unbeaten is a great afternoon’s work,” Robins said.

“I thought we were the better team even though they gave us a really tough afternoon.

“We had four or five chances that you’d expect the players who had the chances to score and if it weren’t for a mixture of rushing things, their blocks and goalkeeper saves – we would’ve been out of sight.

“They have good players that can move the ball and deliver balls well out wide to try and shift the balance.

“But we defended really well, we had to be solid and strong.”

Conor Chaplin, who was a Barnsley target before moving to the Sky Blues, passed up a golden chance in the sixth minute when he side-footed wide after a fine one-two with Luke Thomas.

Jacob Brown passed up two clear-cut opportunities for Barnsley, intercepting Junior Brown’s backpass only to see home goalkeeper Lee Burge touch his low shot onto a post before firing wide from Mamadou Thiam’s low cross.

Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel said: “That wasn’t the best game from us – we don’t have to lose this game because we had enough chances but we gave Coventry too many chances to score.

“It’s hard for the players but we can only win together. Today we played with five defenders and five attackers and that’s not successful football. We gave them too much space.

“We have spoken about defending set-pieces. It wasn’t a mistake from one player but we should have done better.

“Coventry defended higher than the other teams we have played and we thought we could use our speed to break through.

“It’s early in the season so it’s enough time to learn. We have a young squad and although today was not the best performance, I hope that we play better next week.

“Every player has to stand up for the next game and we can go on our way.”
