An own goal and a late Paul Mullin strike ended Carlisle’s unbeaten home record in the league and enabled Tranmere to post their first away win of the season with a 2-0 scoreline at Brunton Park.
Carlisle had cause to rue a missed penalty by Jamie Devitt in the 75th minute as Rovers hit back, forcing a Tom Parkes own goal before making it safe with Mullin’s fine solo effort.
Carlisle came under early threat as Tranmere peppered Adam Collin’s goal with a series of early efforts.
Forward James Norwood flashed a left-footed strike just wide then former Carlisle striker Cole Stockton went close with a rasping drive which forced Collin to tip over the bar.
Carlisle had their moments in attack and Richie Bennett was guilty of a couple of misses. A header across the face of goal bounced off the top of the crossbar, then he turned another effort wide when left all alone eight yards out with Tranmere expecting an offside call.
The game really burst into life in the 75th minute when Bennett was floored in the box and Scott Davies produced a fine save to deny Devitt from the penalty spot.
Five minutes later Parkes poked Jake Caprice’s low cross past his own goalkeeper and in the 86th minute substitute Mullin curled an unstoppable 25 yarder past Collin to clinch the three points for Tranmere.
