Ainsworth claims Charlton fans would have been impressed with Wycombe

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth claims that Charlton’s fans would have been impressed with the visitors after his side lost 3-2 at The Valley.
The Chairboys went ahead after six minutes when Randell Williams cut inside to place shot past keeper Jed Steer.
However, an own goal by Sido Coelho Jombati and two quick second half strikes from Lyle Taylor and Naby Sarr gave Lee Bowyer’s men the points despite a late consolation header from Paris Cowan-Hall.
Ainsworth revealed he was proud of the way his side competed with one of the league’s favourites.
He said: “We have real positives to take but it almost makes my mood worse because the result says they were the better side.
“We had moments at 1-0 where we could have increased our lead but I don’t think the turning point was the equaliser, it was for Taylor’s goal.
“After that, the body language from our side changed. However, I think Charlton fans would have certainly been impressed with us as I’m sure they would have thought that it was going to be an easier game than it was.”
The 45-year-old also stated that the defeat was as much down to “sloppy errors” as it was the Addicks’ performance.
“We competed handsomely with Charlton. I’m not disappointed at all; it just hurts as we were so in control at times,” he said.
“I call on my experienced players to help see us through but they made a couple of sloppy errors today, which will get punished in this league.
“Overall, Charlton took their opportunities, but I’m looking forward to next week against Oxford.”
Addicks boss Lee Bowyer has called for striker Taylor to get even better following the summer signing’s man-of-the-match performance against the Chairboys.
“Lyle [Taylor] had a bad start to the game but in the second half he was the player we signed – I expect to see a lot more of that now.
“He lost the ball six times out of seven in the first half and it wasn’t just him. Karlan Grant and Nicky Ajose did likewise. I told them at half-time that it wasn’t good enough.
“I’m just delighted that he has got another goal as that’s four in seven matches now and he will get fitter and stronger over time.”
Bowyer praised Wycombe’s performance despite Ainsworth’s team coming away from The Valley with nothing.
“Wycombe showed today that they are a decent side who are difficult to play against,” he said.
“They have a big fella up front who you just can’t move; he’s unplayable at times so you have to be careful.
“I thought they were a constant threat but I’m happy, we got three points and now we can move on to next week.”
