Connah’s Quay produce Irn-Bru Cup shock

Welsh Premier League side Connah’s Quay Nomads recorded a shock in the Irn-Bru Cup with a 1-0 win away to Falkirk.

Michael Wilde scored the only goal after 46 minutes to knock out the Scottish Championship side.

Boreham Wood’s Challenge Cup adventure came to an end as they went out 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out to Dunfermline.

The National League side did not even have to cross the border, with Scottish Championship outfit Dunfermline venturing south into Hertfordshire.

The Pars made progress when Connor Smith’s penalty kick came back off the crossbar after the game had finished 0-0.

Boreham Wood’s fellow National League side Sutton did make progress with a 1-0 win away to Airdrieonians, with the only goal of the game coming from Tommy Wright with 21 minutes on the clock.

Queen of the South went four goals to the good by 31 minutes against Crusaders before the Northern Irish Premiership side fought back.

Stephen Dobbie scored twice to reach 20 goals for the season, with Lyndon Dykes and Gary Harkins getting Queens’ others. Crusaders had to settle for a 4-3 defeat with two consolation goals from Rory Patterson, the second a penalty, before Paul Heatley ensured a nervous finish for the home when he netted with five minutes remaining.

Ross County’s Brian Graham scored four times and James Lindsay made it 5-0, all the goals coming before the interval, to see off Raith Rovers.

Bobby Linn, Danny Denholm and Michael McKenna were on target as Arbroath defeated Annan 3-0 but Dundee United went out on penalties after drawing 1-1 in normal time with fellow Championship side Alloa.

Matty Smith had given the home sided the lead after 15 minutes before Alan Trouten levelled the scores with a penalty with 12 minutes remaining and the visitors won the shootout 5-4.

Montrose defeated Dumbarton 1-0 and there were also win for East Fife, Edinburgh City, Bohemians and St Mirren Under-21s, who won the battle of the age-groupe sides with a 3-2 victory over their Hamilton counterparts.
