Chris Smalling: Manchester United must keep more clean sheets

After Manchester United's mixed start to the season, Chris Smalling believes United need to start keeping more clean sheets, as they have done in previous seasons.

'We need to get back what we've done in the last few seasons'
United have played four Premier League games so far this season and kept just one clean sheet.

When speaking about Manchester United's poor defence this season, Smalling told MUTV:

"Last season we picked up a lot of clean sheets and this year we've conceded early goals.

"We need to get back what we've done in the last few seasons when we've conceded very few goals, like on Sunday.

"It was down to us players to stand up tall and get a result, and we're very happy with the win.

"With us not having a game in the week, we've been able to work on a lot of patterns of play and you could see them coming out and finishing with the goals, so we were happy with that."

Manchester United 2-0 Burnley

In Manchester United's opening three league games, they failed to keep a clean sheet.

Manchester United began the season with a 2-1 win over Leicester City.

The Reds Devils then lost to Brighton 3-2.

United then took on Tottenham and after dominating the first half of that game, would end up losing 3-0.

However, in their last game vs Burnley, United looked much more solid at the back.

Romelu Lukaku would open the scoring for Manchester United in the 27th minute vs Burnley.

The Belgian then got his second of the game in the 44th minute.

United would go down to 10 men in the 71st minute when Marcus Rashford was sent off.

But even with 10 men, United were able to hold out for their first clean sheet of the season.
