Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett praises Ronan Curtis after brace against Plymouth

Ronan Curtis received the plaudits from manager Kenny Jackett as Fratton Park bowed down to a new Portsmouth hero.

The Irishman scored two and set up another as Pompey cruised to a 3-0 victory over Plymouth.

Jamal Lowe etched his name on to the scoresheet to continue his remarkable start to the campaign but it was Curtis who stole the show.

And Jackett commended the winger’s quick transition into League One.

Jackett said: “It was a good performance and a deserved win. I thought for the first 30 minutes we were excellent.

“We lost our way a bit to let Plymouth have a little spell just before half-time.

“We needed to realign for the second-half and the lads that came on were, in my opinion, as good as the players that came off.

“That’s good for us and in the second-half we went further away and got the deserved win.

“Ronan has got some goals to start his career which has given him the confidence and that’s a big thing when you are coming over from Ireland.

“He has made the transition well.”

Pompey got off to a lightning start but struggled to beat an inspired Matt Macey in the Plymouth goal.

However, Curtis gave the south coast side the lead midway through the first-half when he got on the end of Lowe’s cross to slot home.

The away side gave Pompey a scare minutes before half-time when Jamie Ness hit a thunderous shot from outside the box.

Plymouth continued to trouble Craig MacGillivray with striker Freddie Ladapo’s lob going just wide of the goal after a coming together between the two.

But the visitors were dealt a blow just after the hour mark when Curtis turned creator for Lowe, leaving the winger to head home from his pin-point cross.

It was over with 20 minutes to go as Curtis surged forward, he shrugged off Gary Sawyer before proceeding to rifle home from an ever-narrowing angle – his fifth goal of the season.

Plymouth boss Derek Adams took aim at the referee after he felt the Pilgrims should have had a penalty when MacGillivray and Ladapo clattered into each other.

Adams said: “The decision in the first-half changed the game.

“We should have had a penalty when their goalkeeper went right into Freddie. It was a stonewall penalty.

“And if that had been given it would have been a completely different game.

“We had a couple of other penalty appeals too, which again didn’t go our way.

“We’ll let them (Portsmouth) have their day. We have finished above them in recent seasons.

“We didn’t track back for a couple of their goals and should have stopped more crosses.

“Despite being bottom of the table, we’ve got to keep going.”
