Michael Flynn hails Newport character in Port Vale victory

Newport boss Michael Flynn said his squad were “a joy to work with” after their 2-1 victory over Port Vale at Vale Park.

The victory takes his team up to second place in the Sky Bet League Two table following just one loss in the Exiles’ opening six league games.

Flynn said: “It’s a joy to be their manager. I’ve got a squad of players who work hard every day for themselves and each other.

“But (he joked) I don’t think the board will be happy because the win bonuses go up when the boys are in the top two.

“It was a gritty performance, they lumped the ball in the box but the boys dealt with it tremendously.

“They hit the post twice and had a few chances – but so did we.

“It was the most important win of the season, they showed character today that they will need to show for the rest of the season.”

Newport’s two goals came from defenders Scot Bennett and Dan Butler – eight side of Tom Pope’s equaliser – which surprised the Newport manager, but he was grateful for their assistance as striker Padraig Amond struggled before being withdrawn with a dead leg.

He added: “When those two are scoring you have a good feeling because they don’t even hit the target in training.

“Today was one for him (Amond) to forget.

“At half-time I told him to put his boots on the right feet but he’s pest and he’s doesn’t keep still. A lot of teams would like to have him and I am glad we have got him.”

Opposing manager Neil Aspin bemoaned his side’s luck as they lost their third-straight game.

Aspin said: “One thing that alludes this club at the minute is luck. You can say ‘you make your own luck’ but we are certainly not getting any luck in our favour.

“I take responsibly but I felt the players gave their all today and that is all you ask of them.

“I must say this week I was critical of their performance at Tranmere but I can’t fault the players today, they have given everything.

“I realise we are in a bad run of form and I’m under pressure but I can’t fault the players today.”

One bright note for the hosts was Pope, whose first-half equaliser broke the record for most goals scored at Vale Park in the process.

“It’s a great achievement,” Aspin said. “Feed the Pope and he will score.

“I know if we get the ball in the right area then he will score goals.

“I was pleased that we got more crosses in the box in general and I thought our play was better in that respect.”
