Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel satisfied with Gillingham win

Daniel Stendel was in a positive mood after his Barnsley side maintained their unbeaten start by beating a stubborn Gillingham 2-1 at Oakwell.

Kieffer Moore netted a brace, with Josh Parker scoring a consolation for the visitors.

Stendel said: “For 65 minutes we played a very good game, we controlled the game, we controlled the opponent, we played very good in possession and created chances to score.

“At 2-0 in front I was satisfied, then we had one moment where we went to sleep quite comically and it was 2-1.

“I was a little bit surprised, the last 20 minutes were not easy for us. The situation changed, Gillingham launched long balls and in the end we had a problem with set-pieces.

“I’m happy he (Moore) scored today. He scored two goals and we won. It’s a good situation for us.

“It’s also a situation where all players played very well. We had the ball in the centre of midfield, Kenny Dougall, Alex Mowatt and Brad Potts won the balls, we controlled the game and had good situations from the wingers with crosses.”

Gillingham manager Steve Lovell said: “That’s the game in a nutshell – you can’t give a team like Barnsley two goals. You can’t give any side two goals and expect to come back, especially against a quality side like they’ve got.

“I’m disappointed because we knew they would create problems and they did, but we gave them two goals.

“First goal I blame Tom Holy. It’s gone in near post, the goalkeeper’s got to save that. It’s a great strike, but I don’t care, the goalkeeper’s got to save that.

“The second one’s a penalty from a corner and we knew they do a short corner. Elliott List doesn’t do his job and concedes a penalty.

“To be fair they’ve done us proud second half. They fought for everything, we had a few opportunities where we could’ve got something at the end of the game. Barnsley gave us respect – they took their time because they knew they were in for a bit of a fight second half.”
