Darren Way enjoys proud moment as Yeovil grind out win at Grimsby

Yeovil manager Darren Way described watching his side’s 1-0 win at Grimsby as a proud moment.

The Glovers continued their recent good form in League Two with a narrow victory on their travels to Blundell Park thanks to Omari Patrick’s first goal for the club.

The winger came off the bench for his Yeovil debut and made an instant impact as he curled in a second-half winner in what was otherwise a dour game.

But that certainly did not diminish Way’s sense of achievement for his side as they picked up their third win of the season.

“To come away from home and play in the manner that we did feels very good,” Way said.

“I have to say it was hard for us to play our game. The pitch was like a desert, it was very dry and it stopped us playing the way we wanted to, and fair play to them because they kept it dry for a reason.

“It was hard to get that flow that we’ve had in previous games, but we knew that they would probably tire and we would get that opportunity.

“It was a great goal, but being in the technical area, what pleased me more was the spine of the team, which I touched on before the game.

“When you’ve got that base, and they’re heading, kicking, blocking and tackling, you can build on that. It was a proud moment for me to watch them.”

For Grimsby boss Michael Jolley, the wait goes on for a first win at home this season following their third defeat of the campaign.

And the 41-year-old admitted to being less than impressed with his side’s display as they failed to create any meaningful chances after the break.

“It was a tight game,” Jolley said. “I think we probably shaded the first half, we had a number of good situations to get that all-important first goal.

“Then we’ve been caught with a poor goal to concede in the second half.

“I was disappointed with our second-half performance. I’ve spoken with the players, they understand that the second half wasn’t acceptable, so we know that we have to improve.

“I’ve said many times I want the team to play with energy and I want the team to play with as much quality as they can.

“You can’t guarantee that all the time, but I was disappointed with the way we went about our task in the second half. I think we can do better than that and I’ve seen us do better than that.

“I wasn’t happy with the way we played in the second half and I’ve made that abundantly clear to the players.”
