Boss Joe Dunne hails Cambridge belief

Cambridge United finally got the win their recent performances deserved, according to head coach Joe Dunne after David Amoo scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory at Stevenage.

Amoo was left unmarked to tuck in his first of the season from a Jabo Ibehre cross, with that 17th-minute strike enough to end back-to-back U’s defeats.

In turn it provided just a second victory of the season – but Dunne knows his side are better than the one that has struggled for League Two momentum so far this term.

“This is the first time since pre-season we have been able to play all of our attacking players combined,” he said.

“They have all done what I have asked of them in training and there were a few moments when we opened them up and not delivered the final ball, that’s something to work on.

“In the first half we dominated and they had to change their shape to deal with us.

“We showed bravery in picking an attacking line-up and I think this is a culmination of our recent good performances, even though we did not pick up the results we would have wanted in those games.

“If you keep believing you will get what you deserve and that is the message to the team.

“It’s a good day for the team and the club because it is always great to get a win over your local rivals.”

United also secured bragging rights in a game that was far from vintage with Stevenage losing for the first time at home this season.

Luke Wilkinson threatened with a driven right-footed effort as the hosts searched for a leveller, while they should have equalised in the closing stages after an almighty goalmouth scramble from an Emmanuel Sanupe cross.

“I thought we were poor, it was a big game for us and we have conceded a comical goal – we gifted it to them,” admitted Stevenage manager Dino Maamria.

“You have to keep your head and concentrate on the job in hand and the goal they scored changed the game.

“I changed the system because I thought we had been too open at the back in recent games but the system was not at fault. It was the goal that changed the game.

“Fair play to Cambridge because they worked very hard for the win and I think they deserved the victory.

“It was a slow start from both teams and it was quite a hot afternoon in a derby game.

“We knew Cambridge had been conceding goals recently and their two centre-backs are not very comfortable.

“We had been working on putting balls into the box and making them defend – but we didn’t do that.”
