Steve Evans criticises referee after being sent off in Peterborough draw

Steve Evans criticised referee Darren Bond after seeing red as Peterborough dropped their first points of the season.

Evans and assistant Paul Raynor were both sent from the dugout in the closing stages of a 1-1 draw against a Doncaster side managed by Grant McCann, who Evans replaced in the ABAX Stadium hotseat.

Posh fell behind five minutes before half-time to Rovers hitman John Marquis’ fine finish and were fortunate not to see their deficit double early in the second period when Mallik Wilks fired against a post.

Ryan Tafazolli headed Posh level just before the hour when converting Siriki Dembele’s free-kick, but it was Rovers who looked the likeliest winners from then on as Wilks blazed a glorious chance over before Tommy Rowe saw a header kept out by a stunning Aaron Chapman save.

Evans said: “I’ve not seen the FA in a while but I suspect I’ll be seeing them next week.

“If the fourth official deems being half-a-yard outside the technical area is worthy of a second yellow card, then that’s not what the League Manager’s Association were told by the PGMOL in the summer meetings.

“Mrs Evans won’t be happy when I’m giving them some money, but hopefully someone can explain the decision to me.

“I just think the referees love to come over and brandish cards to managers and feel in control, but I think every manager thinks it’s a nonsense.

“There’s no doubt we were poor, but I also felt the referee was poor. That’s not the reason we didn’t win, though.

“I gave the lads a couple of days off at the start of the week so I have to take the blame for that and I can promise it won’t be happening again.

“I’m down, the players are down and the fans are probably down, but we’re top of the league.”

Rovers boss McCann said: “I thought we produced an excellent performance and were the best team throughout the 90 minutes except for the little spell in which they got their goal.

“They couldn’t live with our movement and passing in all truth and the fact we had 27 shots on goal highlights that.

“We scored one goal and we should have had four or five in all honesty, but it wasn’t to be for us.

“I’m a disappointed manager and have a disappointed changing room because it’s a game we know we should have won, but we won’t dwell on it.

“It was great to come back to Peterborough. I had some great years here and it is a club which will always be close to my heart.”
