Tom Pope’s record goal not enough as Dan Butler nets Newport winner at Vale Park

Port Vale suffered their first home league loss this season with a third-successive defeat as they were beaten 2-1 by Newport at Vale Park.

The scores were level at half-time after Tom Pope had cancelled out Scott Bennett’s 18th-minute opener, but Dan Butler scored early in the second period as Newport took all three points.

The away side took the lead after 18 minutes, with Bennett scoring from close-range after a Newport corner was only half-cleared.

After 27 minutes, Pope converted Luke Hannant’s excellent corner to level for the home side, becoming Vale Park’s highest-ever goal scorer in the process with 56 goals.

And Vale were nearly ahead a minute later when Newport defender Mickey Demetriou headed against his own post.

Butler scored what proved to be the winner after 48 minutes, firing home from inside the Vale box when left unmarked.

The hosts pressed hard for a second equaliser, with lively substitute Ricky Miller hitting the post, but Newport held on to continue their good start to the season as they moved into second in the table.
