Lampard craves ‘romantic’ Chelsea clash after Derby hammer Hull

Derby manager Frank Lampard would relish a Carabao Cup reunion with Chelsea after his side’s 4-0 demolition of Hull.

Lampard’s much-changed side thrashed their inexperienced opponents at the KCOM Stadium as a meagre 4,666 fans watched, the lowest attendance since the Tigers moved from Boothferry Park.

This match showed 17 changes from last weekend as both teams rested players ahead of their Sky Bet Championship clash at the same venue on Saturday.

Florian Jozefzoon scored twice and Derby’s other goals came from Martyn Waghorn and Mason Mount.

Looking ahead to the next round, Lampard said: “The big boys are coming in which will be a great test for us. It’s a competition we want to do well in.”

Asked about the possibility of drawing Chelsea later in the competition, the former Blues midfielder said: “It’s an obvious question for me, it would be nice. For the romantic link Chelsea would be a good one.”

Lampard admitted the performance had given him a good selection problem for the weekend.

He said: “We will have to see, we will reflect on this one.

“It will be a completely different game. They will have a reaction. We can’t expect it to be 4-0.”

Lampard revealed former Hull defender Curtis Davies would not be fit for that game but midfielder Joe Ledley could return to the side after injury.

Waghorn, a summer arrival from Ipswich, opened the scoring when he latched on to a ball from Bradley Johnson and lobbed the keeper.

Jozefzoon shot past George Long for the second before half-time and the game was over as a contest.

Nouha Dicko and Todd Kane forced Kelle Roos into saves in first-half stoppage time but the Tigers rarely threatened after that.

Mount added a third for the visitors after rounding Long but all Hull could offer in reply in the second half was a curling effort wide from Dicko.

There was still time for Jozefzoon to add his second when he netted from close range from a low cross by substitute Duane Holmes.

Assistant head coach Andy Crosby said Nigel Adkins hoped to add to Hull’s six summer arrivals before the loan transfer window shuts this week.

Crosby said: “We wanted to do business early. We brought six players in.

“We need reinforcements without a doubt. We are trying. We have still got a few days left. We need players, no one is getting away from that fact.”

On the game, he added: “It was a tough night. We used this competition to give players minutes.

“We weren’t on the front foot, we weren’t aggressive enough. It was a learning night for some players.

“They make changes and they bring in Waghorn. They have got the ability to make changes and not weaken their team too much.”
