Jose Mourinho has refused to back his Manchester United squad by turning down the chance to say he is happy with the players at his disposal.

Ahead of Tottenham's visit to Old Trafford on Monday, the United boss -- who missed out on signing a new centre-back in he summer -- was asked whether he is "content" with his players and their performance levels two games into the new season.

"You know my answer," replied the Portuguese at a news conference with reporters at Carrington on Friday, at which he spoke for three minutes and 22 seconds.

Asked what he meant by that, he answered again "you know my answer" before expanding slightly.

"I do not need to answer because I do not even know sometimes why I am here because you [the media] know everything," he said. "During the week it looks like you show that you know everything then I come here and you ask me questions. It's a bit strange."

Jose Mourinho has unmuzzled himself to tell friends he'd have left any other club by now.

Despite prompts from a member of United's communications team that Mourinho only be asked about Tottenham, Mourinho also refused to give an opinion of Spurs' summer transfer window, which saw Mauricio Pochettino's side fail to sign a single player.

"That's not my problem," he said.

He did, however, praise the United fans for their support -- both during the 2-1 win over Leicester and the 3-2 defeat to Brighton.

The players were applauded off by the travelling supporters at the Amex Stadium despite a disappointing performance and Mourinho suggested his team owe them a result against Tottenham.

"The supporters were fantastic in both matches," he said. "Not for me, for the team which is the only thing that matters. In my career I was never selfish and thinking about myself, I was always a club man.

"That's what I am. I am really happy when the supporters they support the team.

"Against Leicester, you can say in a normal situation because the team was playing well and was winning, to be supportive of the team against Brighton, where he didn't play well and lost the match, it gives you a fantastic feeling.

"I hope that feeling, the players also feel it and the players they are ready to give them everything they have."

Meanwhile, sources have told ESPN FC that United have appointed former Manchester City, Watford and Udinese scout Romain Poirot to head their first-team recruitment drive in France.

ESPN FC reported in May that United were looking for a scout to scour France for "world-class" players.

United are also set to launch their new pink away kit in Manchester city centre on Tuesday. The shirt has been inspired by the Manchester Evening News' iconic pink newspaper that ceased publication in 2000.

It is the first time United have unveiled a pink shirt, and sources have said it could get its first outing against Burnley at Turf Moor on Sept. 2.
