Crewe boss Artell fumes over Green booking in broken leg incident at Carlisle

CREWE boss David Artell was left seething after his captain and midfield dynamo Paul Green was booked —while on the ground suffering from a broken leg after a collision with Carlisle goalkeeper Joe Fryer.

Both players were stretchered off and Artell said Green had a fractured tibia, while Fryer, on loan from Middlesbrough, was also going for an x-ray for a suspected leg break.

There was no repetition of Crewe’s mid-week humbling at Colchester where they suffered a 6-0 hammering.

In fact they looked the better team for parts of the game and failed to take chances that would have earned them their first away points and first away goal of the season.

Artell said: “Carlisle won by the odd goal and that is what it’s about. Their lad broke his leg and Paul was booked for breaking his own leg, an appalling decision.

“I’ve seen some things in my life! It was a free ball which went for a corner and they just came together.

“If we had won 4-1 it would not have flattered us. We played well and the scoreline suggests we didn’t. We need to take more care in the final third and we conceded a Sunday league goal.

“We had chance to lead by half time. We dominated the game and I’m stood here with no points which is really, really frustrating.

“It’s not just about performances. But if we play like that every week we will be alright. Carlisle have had two odd goal wins in a week and that’s what it’s all about.”

The win, Carlisle’s third on the bounce, lifted them into fourth place in League Two.

However manager John Sheridan is not one to get carried away and he admitted: “Sometimes you have got to grind it out. Crewe got beaten 6-0 and I knew it would be difficult.

“We didn’t play as well as we have been doing, but we created some good chances. We looked a bit tired and were flat and slow in the first half.”

Sheridan called his side’s performance “workmanlike.” He said: “We have won three on the spin and full credit to the players. I want us to work hard. Some people were not on their game today, but we worked hard as a team to get the result.”

“I told them at half time to lift it a bit and Nadesan gets his goal. He chases lost causes and sometimes I have to tell him to stand still. But he’s a handful and is always there on the shoulder.”

The on loan Fleetwood striker grabbed the winner in the 69th minute, bursting on to a Richie Bennett header to hold off ex-Carlisle defender Michael Raynes and slot the ball past Ben Garratt in the Alex goal.

Green and Bowery missed chances that could have seen Crewe ahead before that and Callum Ainley was a danger on the right flank.

But Carlisle defended well, and although Raynes almost headed an equaliser they got through eight minutes of added time to clinch the win.
