Stendel pleased with Barnsley fightback after draw with Scunthorpe

Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel felt his side could have taken all three points at managerless Scunthorpe after coming back from 2-0 down to take a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw.

The unbeaten Tykes looked dead and buried against the Iron – who axed boss Nick Daws after a 5-0 loss to Fleetwood in midweek – when Cameron Burgess added to Josh Morris’ early penalty with the second half just six minutes old.

But two goals in nine minutes from Kieffer Moore and a stunning strike by full-back Dimitri Cavare rescued a point for the South Yorkshire side, who put their hosts under intense pressure as they pushed for a winner in the final 15 minutes.

Stendel said: “The first half was not like we can play, but the situation was that we won 4-0 on Tuesday and Scunthorpe lose 5-0 on Wednesday, so it was maybe a little bit in the head of my players.

“In the second half we show our true face, but we only have one point.

“We know that Scunthorpe would be motivated and play with heart – this is normal when the manager is sacked.

“If we play 90 minutes like we can, we win, for sure. But at the end, as Scunthorpe were 2-0 in front, we are satisfied with one point.

“I said in the dressing room, I was pleased with the attitude. If we play 100 per cent at the start we would not have been in the situation, but in the second half I think you saw we developed leadership which is good for our young team.”

Morris’ ninth minute penalty – awarded after Andy Dales had been felled by Cavare – was just the start Scunthorpe needed after shipping eight goals in their previous two outings.

It was also the first league goal the Tykes had conceded this term, with a second following in the second half as Burgess rose highest to nod home an an inswinging free-kick from George Thomas.

Barnsley though came roaring back, with Moore stooping to glance home a header from Cavare’s cross before the Guadeloupean capped an eventful afternoon by curling in an equaliser from 20 yards out.

“When you’re 2-0 up at home, you’d like to take all three points, but I’ve got to give credit to the lads,” said Iron caretaker boss Andy Dawson, remaining tight-lipped on whether he might want the job on a full-time basis.

“We were playing a very good team and when they punished one of our mistakes (with the first goal), that’s when we answered questions people have thrown at us.

“We demand and expect high standards and the players gave us everything they’ve got.

“It’s really pleasing that, at 2-2, on the back of what’s happened in the week, we stayed focus and kept our concentration. All the boys, not just the starting XI, stuck together and came through it.”
