Flynn urges Newport to kill games off after narrow Grimsby win

Newport County manager Michael Flynn was delighted with his side’s performance as they beat Grimsby Town 1-0 at Rodney Parade but has urged them to score more.

A superb first-half free-kick from Matty Dolan was enough to secure Flynn’s side all three points.

But Flynn insists his players need to be more clinical in front of goal.

“I’m not going to stop saying this; we should have scored a lot more, we should have killed them off,” said Flynn.

“But we’ll take a 1-0 result at home. It’s a clean sheet and I thought it was a very good performance.

“I wasn’t nervous because they didn’t create anything but they’ve got some very good players and it only takes a ricochet or a slip or anything like that at 1-0 and you can easily be dragged back to a draw.

“Nobody misses chances on purpose. It’s just one of those things. They made a couple of good blocks and we should have had a penalty on Mark Harris – he’s not going to go down in the box there.

“They need to get those decisions right because if we score again then I think it really opens the game up and we could have scored a few more.”

The hosts came close to making the perfect start when Padraig Amond was clean through on goal only for Alex Whitmore to track back and block his effort.

Grimsby’s best chance of the first half came when Whitmore’s header was cleared off the line by Fraser Franks.

Dolan put Flynn’s side into the lead with a powerful free-kick from 20 metres out to give the home side a 1-0 half-time lead.

The game turned into a nasty affair when Grimsby’s Wes Thomas was sent off for a late tackle on Tyler Forbes in stoppage time.

Grimsby manager Michael Jolley announced after the game the Mariners would be appealing Thomas’ red card.

He said: “We will definitely be appealing the red card. The ball has come forward to Wes, he’s raised his foot to control the ball.

“He didn’t know the player was coming in because he came from his blindside so it was very strange to receive a red card for that.

“Even going into stoppage time we felt we could create something but then Wes gets sent off and it kills the game.

“We are not a team that wants to be ill disciplined or get men sent off and we are not a team who wants to surround the team and influence them.”
