Sam Jones scored on his debut as managerless Cheltenham won 1-0 at Cambridge to record their first win of the season.
Jones arrived on loan on Friday and came off the bench to open the scoring after 66 minutes, driving past a man on the line after Manny Duku’s initial shot had been well saved by David Forde.
Their hosts had enjoyed the majority of the opportunities up to that point, with Scott Flinders producing several vital stops.
He saved Ade Azeez’s shot from a tight angle from George Maris’ pass, while just before half time Maris saw a dipping 30-yard effort flick the net on its way over.
Maris was involved again soon after interval, playing Jevani Brown through in the box, but Flinders was quickly off his line to block the resulting shot, before on the hour Brown’s corner was headed wide by defender Louis John.
Cheltenham saw the remainder of the game out, giving them victory in the first game of Russell Milton’s third spell in temporary charge.
