John Coleman hails two-goal Billy Kee after Accrington’s win over Oxford

Accrington manager John Coleman felt two-goal Billy Kee was a diamond as his team twice fought back to win 3-2 at Oxford.

It was Stanley’s second successive away win, following their 2-1 victory at Bristol Rovers.

Kee struck after 62 minutes, and then with a 79th-minute penalty after Josh Ruffels tripped Jordan Clark.

The U’s twice took the lead, through Gavin Whyte and Marcus Browne, with a Cameron Norman own goal bringing Stanley back into it just before half-time.

Coleman said: “Billy Kee was unplayable for the last 30 minutes. It was fantastic to have someone like him out there.

“I thought we had our best spell in the last 15 minutes when we kept the ball well and hardly allowed them a chance.

“We’ve shown unbelievable character yet again. We’ve come from behind again.

“But we know we’ve got to improve. We gave the ball away so cheaply at times it was criminal.

“They (Oxford) will feel they should have got something out of the game, and we know we have to keep possession better.

“We left ourselves so vulnerable to the counter-attack, and if we give the ball away as cheaply as we did tonight we’ll get punished.

“But we finished the game strongly, which bodes well for the future, and I know we can improve, and we will improve.”

Oxford boss Karl Robinson could not hide his disappointment as his team remain rock bottom of Sky Bet League One and still pointless.

They looked great going forward, with both Whyte and Browne smashing spectacular goals.

But at the back, despite the manager making six changes after Saturday’s 4-1 defeat at Portsmouth, they were porous again.

Robinson said: “We’ve at last found a rhythm going forward.

“But ultimately if you don’t keep clean sheets you don’t win football games.

“I can’t change human errors,” Robinson added. “All I can do is prepare the team and make the changes I feel I need to, as I did tonight.

“I feel desperately sorry for the players and the fans – we’re rock bottom and when you have a back four that keep conceding goals you have problems.

“The fans stayed with us and I still maintain we did not deserve to lose.

“But I have to take responsibility. The buck stops with me. And the results aren’t good enough.

“We have to find a way of being solid out of possession – and not conceding sloppy goals.

“Even if we’d got a point tonight it would have been a building block.

“All of our goals are wonder goals, and the opposition keep scoring from our mistakes.”
