Wycombe’s second-half performance against Plymouth delights Ainsworth

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth was delighted with his side’s second-half performance as they fought back to draw 1-1 at Plymouth.

Matt Bloomfield hit the 84th-minute leveller for Wycombe after Argyle had gone ahead after just four minutes through striker Freddie Ladapo.

Ainsworth said: “I thought the boys were superb in the second half and they have set the standard now. I don’t want us to drop below that.”

Argyle boss Derek Adams agreed that Wycombe were on top in the second half.

He said: “I thought we started the game very well and I thought we controlled the first half of the game.

“We should have gone further ahead in the first half but Wycombe were the better team in the second half.

“It was a good ball down the side for the goal and Freddie can run beyond defenders and it was a very good finish – he was able to chip the goalkeeper.

“We didn’t continue to do what we did to get that goal.

“We created openings in the first half but didn’t get that second goal. I didn’t see Wycombe troubling us too much then but we needed that second goal.

“In the second half, we sat back very deep, didn’t get out of our half and Wycombe pegged us in.

“They put us under pressure, we didn’t keep possession as well as we had done in the first half and we didn’t get up the pitch anywhere near as much as we had done in the first half.

“We changed the team because they were flowing at us, and it did help us for a while.

“We had to do something to give us a foothold in the game – and it worked for a while but then we conceded.”

Wycombe boss Ainsworth added: “It was a really sloppy goal to begin with and I am disappointed with that because it’s not like us at all. It was a cheap one, a gift.

“But after that we limited Plymouth to shots from range and set plays. They are a big side. They’ve now been in League One for a year so they know the ropes.

“But in the second half I thought there was only one team in it. In the first half we had spells – you know minutes here and there – but in the second half for 48 minutes I thought we were superb.

“We controlled that half, we knew what to do.

“How we haven’t won the game is beyond me but it just takes one goal at the other end and you can lose the game.

“So you have to be really resolute and you have got to respect a team like this (Plymouth) and a manager like that (Derek Adams).

“It’s performance that I am all about – because results can go either way – and I am very pleased with our performance.

“It’s all about building blocks and that’s another good building block for us, another point.”
