John Sheridan calls for improvement despite first Carlisle win of the season

John Sheridan felt his Carlisle side should have won more comfortably as they opened their account for the season with a 1-0 victory at Cheltenham.

Richie Bennett’s first-half goal was enough to seal the Cumbrians’ first win of the campaign, while Cheltenham remain without a point or a goal from their opening three matches.

Scott Flinders did well to touch Bennett’s header over the bar after a Jerry Yates cross early on before Fleetwood loanee Ashley Nadeson fed the Carlisle striker to slot in the only goal after 39 minutes.

The home side asked plenty of questions of the Carlisle defence in the second half, with Will Boyle and Nigel Atangana both seeing headers cleared off the line.

Carlisle nearly doubled their lead when Hallam Hope forced Flinders into another good block, while Joe Fryer tipped Ben Tozer’s shot onto the post late on as the visitors held onto victory.

“The most important thing is getting three points and I think we deserved it,” Sheridan said.

“We made it harder for ourselves than it should have been, but I won’t grumble.

“We defended when we had to defend, but I think the result should have been more comfortable than it was.

“The clean sheet is also important for us and Joe Fryer made one save at the end when he needed to and I am pleased for the keeper and the back four who also made some great blocks at the end.

“I said to the lads not to make life so difficult for themselves. Cheltenham put balls into the box with centre-halves up front, but we stood up to it.

“I am chuffed to bits for the supporters who have travelled a long, long way and now we can look forward to two home games.”

Cheltenham boss Gary Johnson admitted his side are lacking presence up front as they failed to score for the third match running.

“When you go 1-0 down, as often happened last year, teams shut up shop and you have to be good enough to take one of your several chances,” Johnson said.

“It was better than our other two games in the league, but only in as much as we did create opportunities, but we couldn’t take them.

“You are always disappointed when you’ve lost if we’d have won 1-0 people may have seen positives, but because we’ve lost people will see more of the negative stuff.

“I put Ben Tozer up front in the second half because he’s a presence and we know we need another striker in, probably two.

“At the moment we have worked hard to get players in, but we haven’t seen anyone who could come in and set the world alight.”
