Phil Brown calls for improvements from Swindon despite impressive fightback

Swindon manager Phil Brown wants his team to up their game despite fighting back from two goals down to beat 10-man Tranmere at the County Ground.

The visitors got off to a dream start, scoring twice in the first 12 minutes, before Jay Harris got himself sent off, causing the match to turn on its head.

Swindon capitalised on having the extra man and bagged three goals with defender Joe Romanski netting the winner.

But Brown lamented the Robins’ slow start, saying: “The first-half performance was not just totally unacceptable, it was poor.

“It looked like as soon as they laid a glove on us we went down. It took a rash challenge from one of their players for us to step up to the plate.

“I’m disappointed for Olly Lancashire and Joe Romanski, we do need a centre-half, I haven’t gone into hiding saying we don’t, we need someone that will head it and kick it at this level.

“I took a massive risk with Marc Richards, I got 65 minutes out of him which was a massive bonus.”

Tranmere needed just eight minutes to take the lead through Jonny Smith when he tapped in at the back post.

Rovers doubled their tally with James Norwood managing to slip his effort past Swindon goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

However, Rovers were then reduced to 10 men due to Harris’ needless challenge on Martin Smith in the middle of the park.

The home side took advantage of the extra man in the 20th minute when Elijah Adebayo poked his effort into the back of the net.

The Robins continued their domination in the second half and were rewarded with an equaliser as Marc Richards made no mistake in finishing off fellow substitute Steven Alzate’s cross.

Swindon completed their comeback in the 73rd minute after Alzate’s centre was met by Romanski who guided it calmly past Scott Davies in the Tranmere net.

Rovers manager Micky Mellon insisted that the red card was the moment the tie was lost, but called on his players to defend better.

Mellon said: “We were creative at 2-0 and up to that point and then after that a big moment in the game changes pretty much everything.

“Let’s get it straight, because after that red card we defended poorly for their goals.

“At the times when they scored their goals, we have to defend better. For the last two goals, we’ve got our whole team in the 18-yard box and they’ve scored two side-footers.

“Undoubtedly, the huge turning point in the game was the sending-off. When you go in reckless like that, you run the risk of leaving us with 10.”
