Late Newport goal holds Exeter to draw

Exeter and Newport played out a 1-1 draw in a feisty encounter at St James Park.
Mark Harris’ strike eight minutes from time ensured Michael Flynn’s side returned to Wales with a point after Jayden Stockley had given the hosts in the first half.
The visitors started well, with Jamille Matt forcing Christy Pym into a smart stop with an instinctive shot from 18 yards before Jake Taylor cleared off the line from the resultant corner to keep it goalless.
Stockley fired wide as Exeter hit back, but on 21 minutes, the striker headed in his second goal of the season from Taylor’s free kick after Stockley had been fouled 25 yards from goal.
Jordan Tillson volleyed over early in the second half for the Grecians, while Lee Holmes saw a header saved by Newport goalkeeper Joe Day as the home side got on top.
Day then produced a stunning reflex stop to keep out Stockley’s close-range header and Nicky Law clipped the top of the Newport crossbar from the follow-up.
However, a mistake by Exeter’s Dean Moxey allowed Harris to barge his way past Troy Brown and smash an equaliser with nine minutes remaining.
Both sides pushed for a winner but could not find a way through as Exeter manager Matt Taylor’s winning start to management was ended by one of his former clubs.
