Sunderland remain without a host of players for Scunthorpe clash

Sunderland return to Sky Bet League One action at home to Scunthorpe on Sunday looking to get back to winning ways.

Jack Ross saw his side win on the opening day but a draw at Luton and a Carabao Cup first-round exit at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday followed.

The Black Cats made six changes for the cup tie and their team against Scunthorpe is more likely to resemble that which was held by Luton last weekend.

Ross is still likely to be without a number of players, with Donald Love, Tom Flanagan, Dylan McGeouch, Aiden McGeady, Charlie Wyke, Jerome Sinclair and Duncan Watmore all potentially missing out.

Scunthorpe’s season mirrors that of their hosts so far this season.

Manager Nick Daws made numerous alterations as they were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup at home to Doncaster.

Captain Rory McArdle missed the opening two league fixtures through injury and suspension but returned in midweek and will be keen to feature at the Stadium of Light.

The likes of Jordan Clarke, Josh Morris and Ryan Colclough also came into the team and – despite the defeat – they remain in contention to stay in Daws’ side.
