Professional display pleases Lampard as Derby see off Oldham

Derby boss Frank Lampard praised his side’s professional display after they won 2-0 at Oldham in the Carabao Cup first round.

Mason Mount scored his second goal on loan from Chelsea as the Rams averted any risk of a shock defeat against their League two opponents.

Lampard had suffered a first loss in management on Saturday when Derby were thrashed 4-1 at home by Leeds in the Championship.

But they broke Oldham’s resistance after 36 minutes as Harry Wilson’s free-kick was deflected into his own net by unfortunate defender Sam Graham.

Mount made it safe 20 minutes from time with a fine half-volley from 20 yards, while Derby also hit the post through Martyn Waghorn.

Oldham made chances of their own, but the closest they came was through Jose Baxter’s shot against the bar.

Lampard said: “It was a very good reaction to Saturday and it was comfortable, but only because we approached it in the right way.

“Tonight was important after the Leeds game. I watched it back and we certainly competed on Saturday, but defeats will come and go and the way you react is massive.

“It’s relentless at the moment with games coming so fast, but we are a work in progress with a lot of new signings and I’m really enjoying it

“The people who came into the team tonight did well in a competitive cup tie and it’s a good win. The only downside is that we didn’t score a couple more.

“Mason Mount’s goal was a really clean strike and his game overall was very good. He picked up a lot of good positions and, although people think of him as a goalscoring midfielder, his work rate is also very good.

“We are giving these young players a platform to compete in men’s football when they go out on loan, but hopefully everyone benefits from it.”

Oldham manager Frankie Bunn said: “We were organised, we set up well and we broke away whenever we could, but we again lacked quality in the final third.

“We had three good chances and didn’t take them, so that was the biggest difference between the teams.

“Scoring goals is the hardest part of the game. You can prevent them by defending well, but goals are why front players earn the money they do.

“Derby had that extra class in certain areas of the field and their quality on set-plays is something you rarely encounter in League Two.

“We were always in the game, even at 2-0, and we would have got extra momentum near the end if Jose Baxter’s shot had gone in.

“We possibly deserved something from the game, but it was a better performance and we are looking to build on our foundations.”
