Keith Hill desperate for Rochdale to be more clinical in front of goal

Keith Hill is desperate for Rochdale to be more clinical in front of goal even after beating Grimsby 2-0 in the Carabao Cup.

Oliver Rathbone scored in each half as the League One visitors booked their place in the next round of the competition.

It means they could now be drawn against Premier League opposition, but the Dale boss was not fully satisfied at Blundell Park.

Hill said: “Maybe I’m still disappointed from Saturday, but there are certain things you need to do in respect to being a decent side. I think we were a bit fluffy at times.

“I’m happy with Oliver Rathbone getting two, but you want your strikers to score. You want your strikers to put themselves in goalscoring positions.

“We have got to be ruthless in front of goal, it’s as simple as that. If we are going to play the way we are playing, we will probably concede one or two goals.

“We should be scoring more with respect to the opportunities that we have created. We need to be ruthless, instead of waiting for that next opportunity to come.

“I think we had 21 attempts at goal on Saturday. I want us to have more shots. We have got to be more clinical, and that’s it in a nutshell.”

Grimsby manager Michael Jolley said: “I thought Rochdale were the better team and I thought they deserved to win the game.

“They’re obviously a good League One side, and they brought their possession-based game to us. I think they were the better side in key moments of the game.

“That said, we had some moments where we did well. We had chances to score that first goal, which would have been all important for us.

“They got a good rhythm into their game and they are very good at what they do.

“With the opener, it was a runner from midfield and there was no pressure on the ball. But every time we concede, we look back on it and see if we can learn from it.”

Chances were few and far between in the first half, but Rathbone spotted a gap between Danny Collins and Paul Dixon, latching on to a through ball before slotting past James McKeown.

It came after Alex Whitmore had headed against the post for Grimsby.

Goalscorer Rathbone went close from a free-kick and, at the other end, a superb goalline clearance from Jimmy McNulty prevented Jordan Cook from equalising.

That proved to be telling as, with 10 minutes left to play, Rathbone made it 2-0 with a left-footed drive from 20 yards.
