Bradford boss Michael Collins full of praise for opponents Barnsley

Bradford’s new head coach Michael Collins believes anyone who finishes above Sky Bet League One new boys Barnsley will win promotion.

However, he does not believe his new-look side are “a million miles away” despite their 2-0 defeat in front of a bumper 18,986 crowd at Valley Parade.

Tom Bradshaw put Barnsley in front with a flying header from Dimitri Cavare’s cross in the sixth minute after fellow striker Kieffer Moore had shots blocked by Anthony O’Connor and goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell.

Substitute Victor Adeboyejo put the result beyond doubt with a tap-in in the 69th minute after a good run down the left from fellow substitute George Moncur had set up the chance, and only a superb reflex save from O’Donnell to keep out Bradshaw’s close-range header in the 88th minute prevented a bigger defeat.

The win maintains Barnsley’s 100 per cent record under new manager Daniel Stendel following their 4-0 thrashing of Oxford at Oakwell last Saturday.

However, Collins said: “Nothing in the game surprised me about Barnsley. Credit to Barnsley, they have got a very good team, but I’m not getting carried away with the result.

“There are things to work on and we will start doing that on Monday. Our faults are easily rectified and they will be.

“Barnsley set their stall out last week as to how they are going to approach the game. They are very aggressive how they play with a 4-2-4 formation.

“I thought the early goal changed the dynamic of the game. We started well, but they nicked a goal with their first foray into our half.

“I think they are a very good team, but I don’t think we are a million miles away.

“When the goal went against us our players rushed with their attacks and started forcing things. We lost our foothold in the game and that played into Barnsley’s hands when sometimes you have to be patient.

“That was the big difference. Last week when we beat Shrewsbury we were composed for the first 20 minutes and that helped us to score our goal – and win the game.”

Bradford had a good shout for a penalty turned down in the second half when Sean Scannell – one of nine new players in the Bantams’ starting line-up – went down in the box, but Sussex referee Tim Robinson turned down their appeals.

Collins added: “A penalty would have been a major turning point in the game. I haven’t seen a replay yet, but I’m told it looked clear-cut. The referee makes his decision so you take it on the chin.”

Barnsley’s assistant coach Andreas Winkler said: “We made a brilliant start to the match and produced our style of attacking football. After that Bradford changed their formation and attacked us and caused us some problems.

“But we pressed high in the second half and showed we cannot only play good football with possession but keep going to the end.

“We were more comfortable after the second goal – one substitute George Moncur made the break and the other substitute Victor Adeboyejo scored the goal two minutes after they both came on to the field together.

“We didn’t sit back, but we kept attacking even after going 2-0 up and that comes with our manager’s style of play.”
