Coventry lacked a cutting edge, says boss Mark Robins

Mark Robins felt Coventry’s profligacy in front of goal prevented them from claiming all three points against AFC Wimbledon at Kingsmeadow.
Robins saw his side claim their first point in Sky Bet League One since they were promoted last season in what was a battling performance that saw chances spurned by both sides.
And for Robins, now in his second spell as Sky Blues boss, his side must step up if they are to compete in the division.
“Attacking-wise we didn’t have enough quality, it’s as simple as that. But I think we were only a confident finish away from winning the game,” he said following the goalless draw.
“Defensively I think we coped with everything. They’ve been back at this level for some time now so it was getting used to what we might face at this level, as opposed to what we had to do last season.
“Realistically a point is fair. Also, attacking-wise that’s not how we want to play, but we’ll take it at this stage.
“There’s a lot of new players, a lot of young players, too. They’re just finding each other’s strengths and it’s going to take a while for us to get up to speed.
“I’m looking for the one to come out of the pack. It’s great that we’ve got numbers, but I’m looking for that real bit of quality.”
Wimbledon striker Kwesi Appiah came closest to breaking the deadlock with a first-half header that rebounded back off a post, whilst Coventry’s Amadou Bakayoko saw a dinked effort saved by Tom King in the second period.
But for Dons boss Neal Ardley, the game’s conclusion left a bitter taste.
Penalty appeals were waved away after Scott Wagstaff went down in the Coventry box, and Ardley thought the decision was an obvious one.
“It is a very clear penalty at the end. I watched it back, the full-back comes through the back of Waggy’s legs,” he said.
“If I’m honest, and I have to be careful what I say, if it is in the first minute, it’s given.
“We were the better team. Coventry looked really well organised and were defending for their lives.
“We were limited to a handful of chances. If one of those goes in then we might go on and win the game comfortably.
“But I can’t fault us, we looked a really good team.
“I said to the lads – be disappointed you didn’t win but don’t be disappointed about anything else because we did nothing wrong. We’ve had two clean sheets.
“The intent to score goals is there. We put something like 30 crosses in. We just didn’t have that finishing touch.”
